Mobile Box: Manufacturing and Application in High Current Laboratory Characterization Devices

Abstract : This article describes the fabrication and application of a mobile box (M-Chamber) for high-power measurement of laboratory benches such as short-circuit measurements, current limiting, and large-load application measurements. Most laboratory power supplies do not have the ability to provide high currents, so it is necessary to apply capacitors in the bench unit to boost short-pulse power. However, connecting an additional capacitor bank to the device will indirectly cause device clutter and does not comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). The principle of the mobile box is to place the discharge resistor in the box, which is a safe design and keeps the table device clean and tidy. In addition, this also helps the charged capacitor to discharge in a short time, avoiding user accidents. An experimental study was conducted on the discharge time of the capacitor, and the evaluation of the characteristics of the capacitor in real-time applications was completed.

I. Introduction

In the new product development phase, electrical laboratory characterization plays an important role in verifying the electrical function of the equipment, ensuring that its function meets the data sheet specifications or customer requirements. PROFETTM is a high current product manufactured by Infineon Technologies, Inc., a high-end driver with protection. PROFETTM is a typical MOSFET with enhancements (shown in Figure 1) that enhances its performance in high-end driver applications. PROFETTM devices typically involve high current test parameters. High current test parameters such as short circuit measurements, current limit and various high load application measurements.

Traditional high current measurement devices include device under test (DUT), power supplies, external triggers, oscilloscopes, 150mF/100V capacitor banks, and discharge resistors. The discharge resistance is necessary to improve the discharge time of the capacitor, which avoids accidental electric shock events during capacitor discharge. There is now a way to improve such a device by fabricating a moving case that houses the electrical components of the discharge resistor and the device under test (DUT).

Second, the measuring device

This section presents an example of a high current measurement, specifically an example of a short circuit representation with a function generator that has been equipped with the recommended protection function as an external trigger.

As shown in Figure 2(a), the short circuit characterization device includes a supply voltage, a function generator for triggering pulses, and a plurality of probes connected to the oscilloscope. The power supply supplies voltage to the device's power (Vs) pin, while the function generator generates pulses that are passed to the device's input (IN) pin.
