2017 CES exhibition will open 20,000 new consumer electronics products next week

Foreign media published an article today saying that although smart watch maker Pebble and sports camera maker GoPro have recently suffered a blow, this does not mean that consumer electronics is dead. Only at the CES show next week, exhibitors will release 20,000 new products. Earlier this month, the New York Times sent a bad news to the 180,000 people who were preparing to attend the CES show next week: Consumer electronics are dead! The 2017 CES show will open in Las Vegas on January 5th, when exhibitors from around the world will gather together to release more than 20,000 new consumer electronics products. For these exhibitors, the New York Times report undoubtedly shocked them.

In this regard, Shawn Dubravac, chief economist of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the organizer of the CES show, dismissed it. Dubravats said: "In 2016, global consumer electronics sales were higher than in any previous year, and 2017 will be the same."

The consumer electronics market is evolving

In addition, Dubravaz also analyzed the flaws of the New York Times report and believed that the global consumer electronics market is evolving.

The New York Times report extends the crisis to the entire consumer electronics market, citing the failure of a few hardware vendors, such as Pebble and GoPro. In this regard, Dubravaz completely disagrees with this view, and the sales data mentioned above confirms this.

The New York Times also said that some new consumer electronics products are not as influential as smartphones. Dubravats said that we are now entering a new era: it is becoming more and more difficult, even impossible, to attract all consumers through one product.

As a result, many new products disappeared in a few years after they went on the market. Dubravats said: "Because the overall ownership rate is too low, it is limited to individual groups."

Amazon Echo is a good example. Echo can be said to have achieved unexpected success, even during the Christmas shopping season. However, this product is limited to a specific user base and the audience is not large. If it is compared to a smartphone, it will definitely be a failure.

From quantitative to qualitative

Dubravaz does not think so, he thinks that consumer electronics is more like building blocks. Different consumers will choose different products, and when these products are accumulated together, they may lay the foundation for products such as smartphones.

In the past, when we talked about smart homes, what we can think of is to wire the walls and connect the household appliances together. Today, people can use WiFi networks. Dubravaz expects a more powerful WiFi solution to appear at this year's CES show.

Advances in speech recognition technology have also driven the development of these connected devices. In 2013, the speech recognition error rate was approximately 25%. And Microsoft recently announced that the error rate is currently only 5%.

Dubravats said: "The progress of the past 43 months (speech recognition technology) is greater than the progress of the previous 30 years." This has promoted the development of devices such as Google Home and Amazon Echo.

As these connected devices increase, new application cases may be spawned in the future, which is currently unpredictable. The iPhone is an example.

When Steve Jobs released a generation of iPhones, he said the iPhone is a combination of three products: a music player (iPod), a mobile phone and an Internet communication device. At the time, Jobs did not mention "camera."

But now, iPhone upgrades and marketing campaigns are built around the camera. This has led to an explosion in the number of people taking pictures, while at the same time driving users to share photos on social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, thus laying the foundation for the development of mobile video. In addition, the front camera also triggered a self-portrait.

Dubravac said: "People couldn't predict this at the time. Today, we still underestimate innovation. Currently, the global consumer electronics market is experiencing a lot of trials. Only after experiencing these common senses can we discover new applications. Case."
